Long before the Christian era, 'deity' as such was always female. This goddess-centered belief system comes from the earth considered as a womb in which seeds, when planted, would eventually grow to living plants and trees that could sustain life. Water was a focal point of Celtic spiritual life and many of the wells, springs and rivers were believed sacred and were often guarded by the goddess, and these sacred places were later Christianized and are now protected by saints such as St. Bride and St. Winifred. |
